Taking care of the Singing voice-Part 2 by Emeka Ibe

The second component in voice production is a vibrating structure. This consists of the vocal cords. To produce voice, the vocal cords are brought together. As the column of air generated in the lungs rushes through the windpipe, the vocal cords vibrate to produce a tone. Different tones can be produced by varying the tension on the vocal cords. Interference with proper motion or vibration of the vocal cords causes certain forms of hoarseness.

Once a tone is created, it needs to be modified to produce a proper voice. This involves the third component, the resonance chamber. Te resonance chamber consists of the upper part of the throat, the nose, and the mouth. Modifications of the configuration of these areas alter the voice to produce speech. Again, abnormalities of these regions can lead to certain forms of hoarseness. The speech team of New York voice doctors at NYU Voice Center, under the direction of Dr. Milan Amin, is expert in evaluating and treating singers and other patients with hoarseness.
